Throughout November
There’s a lot going on at Dulwich Picture Gallery this month. As well as the opening of Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven (19 Oct-8 Jan), and David Hockney’s Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy taking pride of place as November’s Masterpiece a Month, the Friends present pianist Imogen Cooper, who will perform works by Haydn, Schumann, Beethoven and Brahms and a recital on 10 November at 7.30pm (£30, £28 Friends).

THE SOUTH BANK

Magistrate Jane Gillespie, who sits on the Camberwell and Tower Bridge bench, is one of 12 magistrates curating a pioneering exhibition of offender art at the Royal Festival Hall. The Koestler Trust’s Art by Offenders showcases over 150 art works, shortlisted from the 7,500 entered into the annual Koestler Awards. Koestler Trust chief executive Tim Robertson said: “Art has the ability to rehabilitate and transform lives – to give people a purpose and in many cases a chance to pursue a previously unexplored talent.” Free.

THE STRAND

The Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) Forgotten Spaces 2011 exhibition showcases innovative proposals for the rejuvenation of neglected spaces in Greater London. It follows the Forgotten Spaces design competition, which asked architects, artists, local groups and designers to nominate a forgotten space and conceive an inspiring proposal for its regeneration. Festival firepits in Crystal Palace and a microbrewery and beer garden in Brixton are highlights. Free.

CAMBERWELL

Internationally acclaimed Mexican artist, Gabriel Kuri, presents Before Contingency After The Fact. He has devised an installation that spans South London Gallery’s main space, the Clore Studio and interlinking back garden. The artist uses sculpture to exploring the ideas and imagery associated with housing, shelter, aid and economics. On 16 November, catch Kuri in conversation with SLG director Margot Heller (7pm, £5/£3 concs). Exhibition free.

NORTH LAMBETH

Celebrated experimental film artist Guy Sherwin presents Movements in Light, an exhibition of new and rarely seen works at Siobhan Davies Studios. His work is best characterised by its use of movement and light, both within film and the processes he sets up in making them. Here he presents Staircase (2011), filmed at Siobhan Davies Studios, alongside older works including rarely seen drawings and mechanical pieces. Admission free.

SOHO

Dulwich-based theatre company Two's Company presents Rob Young’s enchanting new British musical EX at the Soho Theatre. The ‘play with songs’ tells the story of two former lovers, Ruby and Jack, who meet in a bar. Ruby is about to emigrate to America with her new partner, but decides to meet Jack one more time to make sure she’s doing the right thing. “It's funny, poignant and ultimately heart-breaking," says Tricia Thorns, who is directing. Once Upon A Christmas Time is the enchanting New Show by The Little Picture Company, held in conjunction with Children’s Charity Make a Wish Foundation UK. Showcasing The Little Picture Company’s new artistic offerings for children, you’ll find unique works of art and beautiful new product lines all made to spark children’s imaginations. A portion of all proceeds from the show will be donated to Make a Wish Foundation UK, a charity that grants wishes to children fighting life-threatening illnesses.

NORTH LAMBETH

From Garden City to Green City at The Garden Museum brings together the many visions, designs and projects that have inspired the ‘green city’ movement over the last 150 years. From the Victorian pioneers determined to introduce more ‘green’ into post-industrialised Britain to today’s ground-breaking architectural schemes and community movements like ‘guerrilla gardening’, the exhibition considers whether our enthusiasm for sustainability means we’re ready to make a lasting change. Take part in a panel discussion on 16 November titled ‘Realising the Green City’ (6.30pm, £10).

This is Design, a celebration of the Design Museum’s Collection, examines the impact of design on the modern world.
