Victoria Purcell reviews the Electric Social, Brixton

Electric Social, newly opened on Acre Lane, Brixton, is pretty darn cool. The interior is potent mix of pub, club and country hunting lodge - pop art and funky light fittings gelled with wood paneling and mounted deer heads. Sound a bit odd? Well it works, wonderfully well, so I guess you’ll just have to go and see for yourself.

It’s a place you can head to relax and unwind with a drink and something to eat, or rev up and go nuts with, well, a few more drinks! After a hectic week, my friend and I opted for the former. Seating ourselves at the high, minimalist-design communal tables, which seamlessly juxtapose the Union Jack-emblazoned leather sofas (must get me one of those), and ordered a couple of Leffe beers, the Cornish squid in Ding Dong ale batter (great name!) and ham hock and pork belly terrine with cooled mushy peas. Great as a light bite or, as we had ordered them, a starter before the main event of beetroot crusted salmon fillet with pink grapefruit and herb sauce on aubergine and coriander compote, and grilled 10oz rib eye steak with béarnaise sauce and balsamic tomato and shallots salad.

The dishes were pretty substantial, but one cannot order steak without chips (their saltiness balanced out the sweetness of the salmon nicely, too), nor, in our case, a mixed tomato salad. And so we feasted at the hunting lodge! And sank a couple more Leffes to ease the week’s tensions.

The food was delicious, the portions generous, and the menu imaginative and flexible, catering for nibblers and Sunday roast fans alike. Had we not been so shattered we’d have headed upstairs as the music began to pick up pace, but there’s always next weekend, and live music Wednesdays… I can’t wait to return.
